Online Guitar Lessons? How Does That Work??

Lisa Teaches Guitar Online

Ever since I started teaching guitar via the Internet, my friends are full of questions:

“You teach guitar online? Really?”

“How does that work, anyway?”

“What do you teach, and to whom?”

“Can people really learn guitar online?”

So guess what: In my world, today is “Take Your Friends to Work” Day!

(Here’s a sneak sample lesson you can watch now. Click this.)

Come along with me to get a little window on my work day:

So, I’m teaching guitar online, and here’s how it works:

I create videos of myself teaching guitar lessons, and post them to GuitarTricks.com.

I design the lessons, and then film them in a video studio.

I upload the videos to GuitarTricks, where they then become available to subscribers of the site.

Students subscribe to the site for a minimal monthly fee, and may come and go at any time. There’s no long term commitment required.

Once you’re in, you can study any lessons you want, whenever you want, as much as you want.

You can work with the videos online, or you can download them to your computer to keep. You can also print out the sheet music, tablature, and text information for each lesson.

Here’s what students see when they go to one of my lessons. (Click this.)

There’s also a Jam Station on the site, where you can play an audio recording of the music from the lesson in a continuous loop, which you can then practice to for as long as you like.

If my students have questions, I’m personally available via email.

There’s also an active forum on the site, as well as a very active Facebook community, where students can meet one another, meet their instructors, talk about music and guitar, ask questions, and win free guitars and gear (really!) in monthly drawings.

One of my former “real world” students joined Guitar Tricks and won an amazing effects processor worth hundreds of dollars, in the monthly drawing. (go Graham!)

I am one of about 30 instructors for the site, and there are literally thousands of lessons available in every style and skill level.

I think it’s really a good way to go for people who don’t have the schedule or money for one-on-one lessons.

Many of my students tell me they live in an area where it is impossible to find a good guitar teacher, so learning through Guitar Tricks is a great alternative. It’s a large international community of people who are into learning the guitar.

And for me as a teacher, it is very exciting, as I now have relationships with thousands of students worldwide.

Just today I had email from students in Sri Lanka, Nigeria, and good old Wisconsin.

Here’s a sample of one of my video lessons, as it appears on Guitar Tricks. (click)

I hope you’ll pass this along to anyone you know who might be interested in learning guitar via Guitar Tricks. Everyone is welcome.

  1. Hi Lisa, I’m interested in talking to you about guitar lessons for my daughter Clara. We bought her a guitar for her high school graduation, and she has been teaching herself how to play all summer. I think she is ready for some professional guidance. I’d like to pay for her to have professional lessons as a gift for her 18th birthday. Please contact me via e-mail at aimeecreelman@hotmail.com or call (but be discrete as this will be a surprise) at 257-4995. I believe we are neighbors on Washington St.
    Thanks, Aimee
