How do I know when it’s time to change my strings?

How often you restring the guitar depends to some degree on how much you play it, and what kind of strings you use. The main factor in strings losing their oomph is that they get tired out over time, and pick up dirt, sweat, oils from your hands, etc. This results in a dulled, un-sparkly, sound.

Old strings that are due to be changed may feel a bit stiff and un-resilient. You may also be able to see or feel a little buildup of residue on the strings.

You can judge when you need to change your strings by the sound and feel of them. If they feel resilient and sound relatively bright, you’re probably ok. If not, try a new set, and keep them around until they don’t feel or sound good anymore. This could be anywhere from a few days to a few months, depending on how much you play.
